Following an incredible 2023 season, quarterback Jayden Daniels became the third LSU Tiger to win the Heisman Trophy. Daniels follows LSU legends Joe Burrow (2019) and Billy Cannon (1959) in winning college football’s top individual award.

Can’t Catch This Tiger by the Tail

Jayden Daniels captured the 2023 Heisman Trophy by edging Washington QB, Michael Penix Jr. for the coveted award. Daniels had an exceptional 2023 season, leading the nation in total offense with 4,946 yards in just 12 games, which averages out to 412.2 yards per game. He also passed for 3,812 yards, which ranked third nationally.

His 40 touchdowns passing tied for first nationally with Oregon QB Bo Nix, who played one more game than Daniels. Daniels’ passing touchdowns, combined with his 10 rushing touchdowns, added up to an impressive 50 TDs for the season. On the ground the Tiger’s QB rushed for 1,134 yards on 135 carries. It was an outstanding achievement for the LSU quarterback and made him an obvious contender for the Heisman.

When the voting was tabulated to determine the 2023 Heisman Winner, Daniels received 35 of the 51 first-place votes and 130 total points from the AP Top 25 poll voters. Washington quarterback Michael Penix came in second with 15 first-place votes and 97 points. Oregon QB Bo Nix was third, Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison fourth, and Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon II fifth. Daniels’ impressive stats and consistency throughout the season made him a clear choice for the award.

Winning the Heisman Trophy is a prestigious honor, and it cements the legacy of any player who receives it. Daniels is the first true dual-threat quarterback to win the award since Kyler Murray won in 2018, and he joins Joe Burrow as one of two LSU quarterbacks to join the Heisman fraternity. Winning the Heisman is an achievement that not many players can claim, and it puts Daniels on a pedestal alongside some of college football’s greatest players.
