Demon Deacons Nickname
Wake Forest athletic teams were once
known as the “Baptists” and “Old Gold
and Black.”
However during a big win
over Duke in 1921, sports editor Mayon
Parker described Wake Forest as
having played with a “devilish” spirit and
coined the “Demon Deacons” nickname.
The Demon Deacon mascot
first took the field in 1941.
As a dare from a
fraternity brother, a student named Jack
Baldwin dressed in top hat, tails and
umbrella.
However what began as a prank
has evolved into the costumed character that
delights fans at WF sporting events and
beyond.
Brian Piccolo – Brian’s Song
Before Piccolo played for the Chicago Bears and later had his battle
with cancer portrayed in the movie, Brian’s Song, he played football
at Wake Forest.
Piccolo led the nation in rushing and scoring his
senior season.
Despite those achievements, Piccolo was undrafted
and was forced to make the Chicago Bears as a free agent.
