Devonte Smith was one of the best players in college football this season and he proved it by winning the 2020 Heisman Trophy. The senior wide receiver from Alabama was a big part of the Crimson Tide’s undefeated national championship offense, making big plays all season long. He finished the year with 1,856 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns, both of which were tops in the country. Smith also had a great run after catch average of 13.1 yards per reception. Along with his receiving stats, Smith added added additional scores with a punt return and rushing TD. All of these numbers helped him earn this prestigious honor. 2020 Heisman Finalist
2020 was an unusual season for college football with universities having to overcome the nationwide effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. The 2020 Heisman Trophy voting results included three finalists, Florida quarterback Kyle Trask, Alabama quarterback Mac Jones, and Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Out of these three talented quarterbacks, it was Bama’s Devonte Smith from who earned the award due to his spectacular performances on the field. He became only the second wide receiver to win the trophy since Tim Brown won it in 1987. Smith established himself as one of the best wide receivers in college football history, making him an undisputed front-runner for the award.

When Devonte Smith was honored with the Heisman Trophy, it increased the total number of Heisman Trophy winners from the University of Alabama to three, making it one of the more decorated universities in college football history. Mark Ingram Jr., Derrick Henry, and now Devonte Smith are among this prestigious group of athletes that have brought home the trophy. It’s truly remarkable to think about all these athletes put in to get to where they are today and be part of this amazing legacy at the University of Alabama.
