The Heisman Winners

A Sports News Website

With a landslide victory in the Heisman voting, Oregon’s Marcus Mariota made opponents ‘green with envy’ on his way to winning college football’s top individual award.

2014 Heisman Winner

Marcus Mariota, the 2014 Heisman winner, is a true champion and trailblazer in the world of college football. As the first Oregon Duck to win the prestigious award and a Hawaii-born athlete, Mariota broke barriers and made history. His impressive statistics from that year only solidify his status as a top-tier player. He threw for 300+ yards or more in 7 of 13 games and rushed for 2 or more TD’s in 5 of 13 games. Mariota also led the nation in QB rating with a 186.3 rating and ranked No. 2 in the nation in passing touchdowns. Under his leadership, Oregon achieved a 12-1 record, a Pac-12 championship and earned a spot in the 2014 College Football Playoffs. Mariota’s excellence on the field earned him comparisons to other great college players, such as Gino Torretta, only further cementing his place in college football history.

Preseason 2014 – Top Heisman Trophy Candidates

Jameis Winston
Florida State QB
Sophomore
While leading FSU to a national title as a freshman, Winston threw for 3820
yards as the Seminoles marched to an undefeated season.  Winston
tossed 38 TD pass vs 10 interceptions.  Winston ranked first nationally in
passing efficiency with a 190.8 rating and was second nationally in
passing touchdowns.
Marcus Mariota
Oregon QB
Junior
Last year, Mariota became the first Oregon quarterback to top 4,000 yards
of total offense (4,380) while accounting for 40 total touchdowns and just
four interceptions.  After leading the Ducks to an 8-0 start, the Oregon QB
was the nation’s top Heisman candidate.  However, Mariota was slowed
by a knee injury and Oregon lost two late season games.
Braxton Miller
Ohio State QB
Senior
Braxton led a resurgent Buckeyes team by passing for 2,094 passing
yards, 24 passing TDs, 7 interceptions, 1,068 rushing yards, 12 rushing
TDs.  As a dominating dual-threat QB, Miller delivers the type of stats that
have been well received by Heisman voters in recent years.  Miller’s
performance has shown steady improvement since his 2011 freshman
season.  Miller’s QB rating has climbed from a 138.4 in 2011 to a 140.5 in
2012 before jumping to 158.1 last season.
