Under the direction of head coach Denny Crum, the Louisville Cardinals won the NCAA College Basketball National Championship in the 1980s. Rick Pitino delivered a national title in 2013.

Louisville has thrived in March Madness and made it to the NCAA Final Four in the following seasons. The Cardinals established a tremendous Final Four tradition in the 1980's with four appearances that decade. 1959, 1972, 1975, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1986, 2005, 2012, 2013
Louisville Players selected with the first pick of the NBA Draft
After a stellar collegiate career, Pervis Ellison was picked by the Sacramento Kings with the overall first pick of the 1989 NBA Draft. Known as "Never Nervos Pervis," Ellison played four years for Coach Denny Crum.
Ellison helped UofL win a national championship in 1986. Ellison played for 12 NBA seasons with Sacramento, Washington, Boston and Seattle.
"Just Win the Game"
Those words spoken by injured Louisville player Kevin Ware inspired the Cardinals in their win over Duke.
Ware suffered a devestating leg injury in the first half of the Elite 8 game against Duke. Ware had successful surgery Sunday night following the team's win over Duke.
Louisville Cardinals Basketball Facts
- Louisville is the only school in the nation to have claimed the championship of three major national post-season tournaments including the 1948 NAIB championship, the 1956 NIT title and the 1980 and 1986 NCAA championships.
- Heading into the 2008/2009 season, Louisville Cardinals basketball has produced 18 All-Americans. Notable performers on that list include Wes Unseld, Darrell Griffith, and Pervis Ellison.
- The University has two representatives in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame: Cardinal All-American and former Washington Bullets All-Star Wes Unseld, who was inducted in 1988, and former coach Denny Crum, who was inducted in ‘94.
- Louisville Basketball originated in the 1911/1912 season when the squad posted an 0-3 record.
