Kansas Jayhawks Basketball Traditions
KU has a storied championship tradition
The Jayhawks first coach was James Naismith, the inventor of basketball. Along with serving as the school's head coach, Naismith was also served as the KU athletic director and faculty at the school for a total of almost 40 years before retiring in 1937.
Naismith died in 1939 and was buried there in Lawrence, Kansas. The school first played basketball in 1898.

Note: Kansas was also selected as National Champs twice in the pre-NCAA Tournament era. Those titles were gained in 1922 and 1923.
