First of all I’m a midwest man living in Montana. I’ve watched college FB from the first ESPN game in the morning until the last ABC or ESPN game each Saturday. I don’t think there can be a Heisman trophy presentation without Jeremiah Masoli from the Oregon Ducks. He’s done more for his team than any later this year and more than Dennis Dixon did for the Ducks in 2007 when he was a strong Heisman candidate before his knee injury ended his and Oregon’s season. Masoli should be in the mix for sure!

Best Heisman Performance in Week One

Colt McCoy earned some separation from Heisman favorites Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow in week one. McCoy passed for more than 300 yards and 2 TD’s in a lopsided win over Louisiana-Monroe. Bradford was hurt in the first quarter of OU’s loss to BYU which is a major setback for him. Tebow was not utilized much in an easy win over Charleston Southern.

As far as the players hoping to emerge as top Heisman candidates, I thought that Max Hall (BYU QB) and Zac Robinson (Oklahoma State QB) may have had the biggest weeks. Although neither one of them produced glamorous stats, both players led their teams to key victories. Hall overcame the label of not playing well in big games with the upset of Oklahoma. Robinson’s leading his team to a victory over SEC power Georgia, helped to solidify Oklahoma State’s position as a top team in 2009.

Sam Bradford Struggles to “Shoulder” Heisman Load

The injury to Sam Bradford in the loss to BYU was the biggest Heisman development in the opening week of the football season. Bradford may be out for a week and it seems his hopes for a Heisman repeat may have ended before it really started.

Early thoughts on Heisman 2009

Although the 2009 Heisman chase is quite a ways off, it’s not too early to get excited about the amazing competition that will be competing for the trophy. The top three preseason Heisman Trophy candidates will be previous Heisman winners in the form of Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow. Colt McCoy will also return to compete for Texas and for the Heisman. McCoy came within a wisker of winning the award in 2008.

While these three Heisman candidates will earn the share of the early Heisman race spotlight, there are yet undetermined players that are likely to impact the award in 2009.

As we approach the 2009 college football season, please share with us who you belive will emerge to be either a viable Heisman candidate or actual Heisman Trophy winner.
